Bodies infected with Ebola are most contagious upon death. Because of the time involved to get test results, it is too risky to leave a potentially infected body in the community. Well trained and well protected Red Cross teams have been, providing safe and dignified burials since the onset of the outbreak, approaching every burial as if the person was infected. This protects not only themselves, but communities as well. However, often times, these teams have often faced massive resistance and violence. In the past, these teams have been targeted and attacked for the work they do. Often this is due to the rumours and misconceptions held by communities, for example, that the teams steal the bodies of their loved ones to sell their organs. However, by engaging communities in the Ebola response, teams have been able to not only better understand these rumours, misconceptions and concerns from communities, but also help address them.
